Chemeketa STEP provides support to SNAP (not TANF) recipients to help meet education & career goals
If you receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Chemeketa's SNAP Training & Employment Program (STEP) can provide support to you as you meet your goals.
STEP Eligibility
- Must currently be receiving SNAP benefits
- Must not be on TANF
- Must be interested in pursuing training and/or educational opportunities

Make an appointment with a staff member to learn more about the program, determine your eligibility, and complete the application process.
Career Technical Education (CTE) Programs & Degrees
If you're pursuing a certificate, AAS degree, prerequisite classes or license/certification exam, STEP can help with-
- Success coaching dedicated to provide academic and personal support, connecting you to resources
- Assistance with financial aid and CTE program applications
- Gap funding to assist with required CTE certificate or degree program expenses-
- Admission prerequisites and/or applications
- Tuition and fees
- Items needed for program admission
- Tools, books and other required items
- Industry certification exams
- Limited assistance with transportation
GED, GED-Spanish, ABE & ESOL
STEP can help you as you continue your education and development-
- Help paying for classes
- Personalized coaching and advising
- Funding for GED testing
- Limited assistance with transportation for school & employment
- Free pre-testing
Applying for SNAP Benefits
Eligibility is based mostly on monthly income. That includes earned income from work, as well as unearned income such as social security, disability, child support and more. Find more information about SNAP eligibility for students of higher education, adults without children ages 18 to 50, and older adults from Partners for a Hunger Free Oregon. Options for completing an application for SNAP Benefits Include --
- An online application. If you need assistance completing your online application, call 1-855-626-2050, Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm.
- Print a paper SNAP application and turn it in at a DHS SNAP office
- Call a DHS SNAP office to be mailed a copy
- Visit a DHS SNAP office in person to complete
